Amazing oversized ‘Bequem’ lounge chairs designed by Stig Poulsson and manufactured in Denmark in the 1960s. This striking pair of lounge chairs is a rare and sculptural example of Scandinavian modernism at its most refined and architectural. The ‘Bequem’ model stands out immediately through its exceptional proportions. With a width approaching one meter, the chair has a stately and almost monumental presence, giving it a grand yet understated character within any interior.
The design is built around a simple, strict and clean metal frame executed in square tubular aluminum, creating a crisp and linear structure. This is combined with horizontal ash slat in black finish, connection elements, introducing warmth and subtle contrast to the otherwise industrial aesthetic. Suspended within this frame is a soft, loosely hanging leather seat with matching leather armrests, allowing the body to naturally sink into the chair. This intelligent construction creates both visual lightness and exceptional comfort.
The original brown leather upholstery has developed a beautiful patina over time, with rich tonal variations that enhance the sculptural quality of the design. The generous sling and oversized proportions emphasize the lounge character, making these chairs as inviting as they are visually striking.
The ‘Bequem’ chairs were produced in a very limited edition of approximately one hundred pieces. The first examples were sold through Poulsson’s own design store on Kronprinsensgade in Copenhagen, after which a small number were exported to the United States and select European design stores. This extremely limited production makes the model particularly rare today. A rare and highly collectible pair of Scandinavian lounge chairs, combining architectural clarity, exceptional comfort and true scarcity.
