Ceiling lamp designed by Stilnovo and manufactured by Stilnovo in Italy 1950s. This rare and monumental ceiling lamp represents one of the most striking examples of mid-century Italian lighting, balancing architectural presence with the refined technical detailing for which Stilnovo became known during the postwar period. Its vast saucer shaped shade, executed in off white painted aluminum, immediately establishes a sculptural silhouette that commands the room. With a diameter of approximately 82 centimeters, the lamp possesses a scale that is seldom seen and rarely found in such original condition.
The pierced shade hosts a constellation of small Holophane glass diffuser elements, each seated within its own opening. When illuminated, these ribbed glass shades cast a warm and spherical light pattern that subtly echoes the organic optimism characteristic of early Italian modernism. At the center, a brass stem supports the composition, culminating in a green painted ceiling cap that introduces a soft, unexpected accent. A small brass knob positioned at the lowest point of the lamp adds a discreet but elegant detail, reinforcing Stilnovo’s attention to thoughtful finishing touches.
The lamp remains entirely original as found. The outer surface of the aluminum shade has been well preserved, while the interior shows areas of paint loss consistent with age and use, none of which are visible when installed. All glass diffusers are present, complete and undamaged, which is exceptional for a piece of this size and complexity. Highly atmospheric, architecturally scaled and exceedingly rare, this ceiling lamp stands as a spectacular example of Stilnovo’s early experimentation with form, material and light. It offers a remarkable opportunity for any collector or enthusiast seeking a museum worthy statement piece from the golden era of Italian design.
